Immigration lawyers represent clients with legal issues involving immigration and naturalization law. How do I prepare to meet with an Immigration Attorney?
Bring written documentation of your immigration matter if you have any. If you are already in immigration proceedings such as a deportation or removal hearing, bring those documents asking you to come to court. If you are not in proceedings and need the lawyer to begin a new case for you, you may have some documents relevant to your case. For example, if filing for a marriage -based petition, you may want to bring your marriage certificate, passport copy, and birth certificate with you. It is generally a good idea to call ahead to the lawyer's office to find out what documents you might need for a consultation. Some lawyers even provide questionnaires ahead of time. Be prepared to discuss your case with the immigration lawyer as this will save both you and the lawyer valuable time. It is generally a good idea to prepare a list of questions you want to ask the lawyer. Remember that immigration lawyers usually charge by the hour and their fees can be expensive.
